The photographs in this growing collection are the result of time spent with a camera in an abandoned township in south Skye. As in many other busy island communities, the inhabitants were evicted during the Highland clearances and today their homes stand in ruins among the bracken.

The location is spectacular – a south-facing hollow with magnificent island views – and I go back again and again. However, my photographer's eye is caught particularly by the old walls: remnants of homes, barns, byres and enclosures, where people lived, loved, raised families and made a life (if not a generous living) from the land and the sea.

There are several generations of building here: rounded corners and square; dressed stone or whatever stone came to hand; enclosure walls with flat tops or lines of massive coping stones....

Now, where the hand of man no longer maintains order, nature is busily painting – green, yellow, white, a splash of orange – and my photographs celebrate unashamedly the work of nature as much as that of the people who lived here.

In making these pictures, I am conscious of the hands that lifted each stone into place, aware that the family living within the walls depended on those same hands for the food that would go on their table.

Imagine looking at the gable end of your home and remembering the feel, the weight of each stone, recognising a distinctive pattern here, an odd shape there, knowing that wall as a part of your life, feeling yourself a part of the wall.

When I arrived with my camera, the wall builders were long gone, but their story is still there among the stones. I hope my pictures may tell a little of it.

A limited edition of only 50 fine art prints has been made of each photograph in this collection, and a number have already been sold. You can place your order through the online shop, or by contacting the photographer.
