Following my first solo exhibition in Plockton in 2003, the idea developed of combining photographs and music in a collaborative project with the Scottish Clarinet Quartet.

The next three years brought together eight composers, four bass clarinettists and one photographer, as a series of photographs was created in the Skye landscape, in response to the commissioned pieces of cutting edge, contemporary music.

The two artforms were then combined into an innovative audiovisual live performance, in which the Scottish Clarinet Quartet were silhouetted against a subtly changing photographic backdrop. In performance, the still images displayed in these galleries gradually merge and emerge as an abstract sequence that weaves through the music and takes the viewer far beyond the original subject matter.

The completed work - Songs of the Earth - was launched in April 2006 at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig in Skye. A second performance took place in Edinburgh later in the spring. Opportunities for further performances are now being sought, the music is included in the SCQ's repertoire and the photographs are available as a touring exhibition and slide show.

If you would like to consider Songs of the Earth for your forthcoming programme (music, images or the whole event), please contact the SCQ or Terry Williams.
