NEWS
March
2005
|
Welcome to the first NEWS
of 2005.
A new year and a new look for the website after
a busy winter indoors, thanks to some very challenging weather.
However my 2005 portfolio is one useful result, and a fine, cold
spell in February (no, Skye didn't have all that snow!) meant a
spate of photograph-gathering, so the 2006 collection is well underway.
With my small van now equipped for photo expeditions, I'm looking
forward to exploring some of the west-coast islands beyond Skye
this year. I hope the midge-proofing will work as well in summer
as it has during the winter!
If you have any comments, suggestions or queries
regarding my work, the website
or this newsletter, do get in touch – either through the Visitor
Book, or by email, phone or letter. I'll be glad to hear from
you.

Portfolio 2005 |

Putting together an annual portfolio is an interesting exercise,
as whole year's work comes under scrutiny at once. I got one or
two surprises when I saw the new directions my work had taken during
the past 12 months. And of course, there is always new light to
shed on old favourites...
I hope you'll enjoy browsing. As always,
I'll be glad to hear what you think.

Four BIG frames |
|
|
From January to March, I have a series of photographs on show in
the Royal Hotel in Portree as part of a programme of exhibitions
by invited artists, in collaboration with An Tuireann Arts Centre
I produced four themed compositions to fit the very large frames
provided by the hotel - quite a challenge, but after many sleepless
nights I was pleased with the final result.
The pictures are in the 'Well Plaid' restaurant until the end of
March, after which I'm interested in developing the idea for other
venues - all enquiries are welcome! You can visit an online version
of the show here
on the website.

Online shop - new stock! |
|
February was a busy month, spent tramping the island with a camera
during the daylight hours, and working in the online shop at night.
Who needs sleep?
Finally, the shelves are full again, and you can order prints,
greetings cards and postcards either through the secure online ordering
system, or by email, phone or letter.
There's a new section for mounted composite prints this year, as
I feel several collections lend themselves to this type of presentation.
Feel free to contact me if you'd like to discuss your purchase
before ordering.
Visit
the shop to browse and to see samples.

"Am Baile: the Gaelic Village" |

Where's that? Everywhere and nowhere - it's a fascinating online
archive of the history and culture of the Gaidhealtachd.
I explored the site and visited the team who run it. The resulting
article appeared in the March issue of the Scots Magazine,
together with a number of photographs from the archive.
The article is published here
for you to read. You can see the photographs - and many, many more
- on the Am Baile website. Highly recommended!

Features in the pipeline |
|
|
The Countryman sent me to sea in January, to
find out about Caledonian MacBrayne's lifeline ferry services to the
Hebrides. Despite the storms, I managed to reach North Uist, Harris,
Eigg and Raasay, meeting passsengers and members of the ferry crews
on my travels. The illustrated feature is due for publication in April. |
|
|
Watch out for the May issue of the Scots Magazine, which will
showcase the Skye and Lochalsh Studio Trails. I had a hugely enjoyable
time visiting a number of participating artists and craftworkers in
the area, during the 2004 event. If you don't manage to find a copy
of the publication, the feature and photographs will be published
here. |
All good wishes,
